Used as buffers their conical shape gives a more gradual absorption of energy with the resistance increasing as the buffer becomes crushed or compressed. When used as elastic mounts to reduce vibration they can be screwed into a machines base with the rubber surface resting against the ground to remove transmitted resonance.
